35th Annual Greater Scranton Penn State Chapter Dinner Announces Male and Female Academic-Athletic Award Recipients
Since 1986, The Greater Scranton Penn State Chapter honors two athletes from the Penn State Worthington Scranton Campus who have contributed both athletically and academically earning over a 3.0 GPA. The award in its 28th year this year, will be given out at the annual Greater Scranton Penn State Chapter Dinner on May 8, 2013 featuring guest speaker Bill O'Brien, Head Football Coach at Penn State University.
This year's female Academic-Athletic Award recipient is Jessica Segilia. A Riverside graduate, Ms. Segilia is an HDFS major at Penn State Worthington Scranton and a highly decorated athlete on the Women's Basketball team. This past year Jessica has earned PSUAC 1st team All-Conference, PSUAC Academic All-Conference Award, PSUAC Player of the Year, USCAA All-Academic Team and USCAA All-American 1st team. Jessica also received the campuses Kelly Sledzinski Memorial Award given to an outstanding Women's Basketball player who displays strength, courage and honor in remembrance of a former team member. Jessica also coaches 7th and 8th grade girls' basketball at Riverside Middle School, Assistant coaches the varisty team, and volunteers coaches the Moosic Red Wings Softball team. Jessica led the conference this past year in scoring as the Penn State Worthington Scranton Women's Basketball team claimed the PSUAC Northern Division Title.
This year's male Academic-Athletic Award recipient is Mid Valley graduate Sal Martarano. Sal is a Business major and a Dean's list student at Penn State Worthington Scranton. As a second baseman on the Men's Baseball team Sal had a fielding percentage of .762 this past year. Mr. Martarano was the 2012 recipient of a baseball scholarship from Mid Valley and is a team leader and an upstanding member of the campus community.
The Greater Scranton Penn State Chapter Dinner will be held on Wednesday, May 8 at 6:30 PM at Genetti Manor in Dickson City and will honor local high school students who have received scholarships to Penn State Worthington Scranton. In addition, the dinner will honor the Greater Scranton Penn State Chapter Alumnus of the Year, Robert E. Ghigiarelli as well as the Academic-Athletic Award recipients.
