Soccer Falls Short in a Hard Fought Game
By Mar Tsakonas
On a hot Friday afternoon the soccer team took to the field for their first conference game of the season against Penn State Hazleton. The game was neck and neck and scoreless until about the 18th minute when the scoring drought was broken with a goal by midfielder Brad Bisignani who was assisted by wing Scott Steblinski. Despite a wave of injuries that plagued the team Scranton held off Hazleton's scoring attack in the first half until the 42nd minute when they scored to tie the game at 1-1 going into half time.
The second half started in another deadlock with a defensive battle until Hazleton took the lead in the 57th minute. They expanded their lead again to 3-1 in the 79th minute and the game seemed to be slipping away from Scranton. As the game drew on tensions between the teams began to fly high when a yellow card was issued to a player on both teams. When the dust settled Scranton answered back with a goal of their own in the 82nd minute, scored again by midfielder Brad Bisignani and assisted by wing Scott Steblinski to bring them back into the game. With the score at 3-2 Scranton's hopes for a tie and overtime were heightened. In the 88th minute Hazleton put the game out of reach for Scranton with a goal to make the score 4-2. The game was well fought by both teams and Scranton played very well keeping it close despite having few substitutes and nagging injuries. The next home game will be on Saturday, September 15 at 1pm. Hope to see everyone there!!
